It's a pigeon!

Isn't he a pretty bird?

Elephant's Child was right on the money with her identification of him as a Common Bronzewing Pigeon.  I was lucky to see the brilliant flash on the wings as the sun was just at the right angle.  I wouldn't have been close enough to photograph him as they fly off very quickly if disturbed not like the other freeloaders around here.  I hope he comes back as I've never seen one like this before under the buffet tree in my backyard.

He is very pretty. I've never seen one, all we get around here are the regular pigeons.

I am glad to be of assistance. It is a very badly named pigeon I thought. We had them here briefly, and I hope they come back.

River, I've never seen one before this and that orange flash was really something.

EC, nothing common about him, he was lovely. Funny thing is that mum lived only 3kms from me and was always feeding sparrows but I've never seen a sparrow in my yard, ever.

... and the under-wing is all bronze and they know it. When they want to scare other birds away they raise the wings and flap them, a physical "Cop this".
Close-up the bronzed feathers are even richer gold. If you have flat rolled oats they like that.

ooh yes I like these dudes. And the ones with crests on their heads. Ha ha!

Annie O, I went out and searched under the tree hoping he might have left a small feather somewhere, no such luck.

Fen, I love those crested ones especially the squirtly noise they make when they take off. I used to go up to the Kingston Centre and have lunch with my sister on Saturdays and always took a bag of crumbs for the pigeons. When they started on the new buildings, they "euthanized" the birds because of the mess. A note even did the rounds telling the nurses not to feed any birds on the grounds which my sister totally ignored. She said she was feeding the magpies not pigeons.

John Wren started out rigging pigeon races.

Hi, I'm Robert, loving you all and little Fenstar.

Robert, on the go, just burnt the arse out of a saucepan, lucky I've got two the same size. That's what happens when you're an artist, you forget things. I like hearing a kookaburra. I knew a girl with a laugh like that, Fat Janice from the George. Real cackle, my word, and strange bird herself.

Robbert, if it's not got a hole in the bottom, put in water, bring to boil and drop in bi-carb soda and leave it to soak for a day or two. Turn off the burner before adding the bi-carb. This tip is brought to you by an acknowledged expert in pot burning.

I'll give it a go. Will it clean a stained toilet bowl as well?

JahTeh said...

I think it does but you have to mix it into a paste first then put it on the porcelain, it won't do underwater though.

We have just seen this pigeon in our paddock in the Lockyer Valley, I managed to identify it due to your photo, thanks.
